National Sunshine Week Opportunities for the Public

Sunshine is the Best Disinfectant!
Every year Sunshine Week falls in mid-March, coinciding with James Madison’s birthday and National Freedom of Information Day on the 16th. This national initiative, spearheaded by the American Society of News Editors since March 2005, seeks to educate the public about the importance of open government and the dangers of excessive and unnecessary secrecy. It is funded from the John S. and James L Knight Foundation. During Sunshine Week, Leagues of Women Voters join media organizations, civic groups, libraries, nonprofits, schools and the public in general to promote public awareness and discussion on the importance of open government. The purpose of the week is to highlight the fact that "government functions best when it operates in the open”. The Sunshing Week website, offers a list of suggested activities and events in order to participate.

League of Women Voters has long been a champion of government transparency since our founding in1920.
