Voter Access

We are at the forefront of the most important federal and state voting rights cases around the country. We actively oppose discriminatory voter photo ID laws, fight against attacks against the voter registration process, and hold lawmakers accountable when they try to institute last-minute Election Day barriers. We work year-round to combat voter suppression through advocacy, grassroots organizing, legal action and public education. Our efforts have resulted in the protection of voting rights and ballot access for millions of Americans.

➤ Are PEOs Paid?
  • YES! PEOs are paid for work on Election Day and training sessions.
*************************************

WHAT IS AT STAKE?

Access to in-person voting at stake! We are all watching COVID-19 cases spike across the state of Ohio, with no end in sight for the Fall. Poll workers, who tend to be older and higher risk for COVID-19, are dropping out for fear of contracting the virus. A shortage of poll workers will force Boards of Elections to close polls locations and consolidate multiple precincts into single centralized voting locations. This means longer lines, slower processes, voter prohibitive travel, etc. Not to mention, mass confusion from insufficient and poorly timed communications.

END RESULT: Disenfranchisement of Voters

Patriotism is more than celebrating the Fourth of July or learning revisionist American history. ACTIVE PATRIOTISM is participating in the democratic process to ensure all voices are heard and all votes are counted. Ohio’s Precinct Election Officials (PEO) work hard every election cycle to guarantee voters have a positive and transparent experience when casting a ballot. These patriotic workers help safeguard the election process giving all Ohioans confidence in the results.

****EXTRA ACTION**** VOTER REGISTRATION CHECK-- VERIFY YOUR VOTER REGISTRATION, ASK 5 OTHERS TO DO THE SAME
****BACKGROUND ON FUNDING SAFE ELECTIONS ****
WHAT IS AT STAKE?

Safe elections are at stake! Cases of COVID-19 are on the rise again in Ohio, and experts are predicting another spike in the Fall. Smartly, Boards of Elections are preparing for a surge in mail-in voting, however, those same Boards are also critically low on funding. Yes, the CARES Act allocated $400M for elections, but most of those funds were depleted in the primaries.

With only 4 months until the General Election, Board officials are re-prioritizing which election emergencies will actually be addressed and where scarce election funds will go. Ohio recently earmarked $12M of federal funds to help mail absentee ballots applications to every registered voter and to support Boards of Elections efforts to prepare for mail-in voting... but $400M and $12M are not nearly enough.

FEDERAL LEVEL
$4B, not $400M, is what the Brennan Center for Justice determined is needed across all states to protect the remaining 2020 elections: Primaries, August Special Elections, and November General Election. Months ago, Congress passed the CARES Act, a mere $400M for state elections. In May, the House approved the HEROES Act, providing the remaining balance of $3.6B to protect elections. BUT the bill has since stalled in the Senate.

BOTTOM LINE: Ohio elections need the HEROES Act now. This stimulus package would help shore up safe elections to ensure safe voting during a pandemic AND provide critical funding for the US Post Office.

DEMAND the US Senate approves the HEROES Act or approves a new package that provides $3.6B for elections and supports the post office.

***** BACKGROUND *****
WHAT IS AT STAKE?

Your vote is at stake! You must have an accurate and up-to-date voter registration to request an absentee ballot, vote by mail, or participate in early voting. NOW is the time to check your voter registration and ask your friends and family to check their voter registration. This is especially important because of recent voter purges -- and this year's target for purge will likely be voters with the wrong address. That means you could be purged from the Ohio voter rolls if your address is out of date or incorrect!

Aside from voter purge, we must also contend with an overwhelmed election system in the middle of a pandemic. Ohio election officials recently announced that CARES Act funds were approved to mail out absentee ballot applications to every registered voter. Great! But these applications will not be forwarded if your address is wrong. Check your voter registration now! Get ahead of it. While you may think there is plenty of time, do not risk your vote by waiting and overloading the already stressed voting system. Check your voter registration now and make necessary corrections BEFORE the voting system is weighed down with millions of absentee ballot requests. We all remember what happened in the primary when the voting system was overloaded.

STATE LEVEL

Locally, Ohio's SB191 provides the critical online application for voters to request an absentee ballot, yet this bill still sits in the Ohio Senate Government Oversight and Reform Committee. It has already had three hearings and is supported by the Secretary of State and the Ohio Association of Election Officials. We NEED the Senate to move SB191 out of committee onto the Senate floor for a YES vote.

***** BACKGROUND *****
WHAT IS AT STAKE?

A safe, fair, and secure election is at stake... especially while battling a global pandemic. No one knows what direction COVID-19 will take in the fall, but we do know that cases are up-ticking across the country right now. While it is up to the Ohio General Assembly to determine election policy and funding, COVID-19 is rapidly eating away at our already depleted state budget. And Ohio is not alone, every state is suffering. If we are going to have a safe, fair, and secure election, we need FEDERAL dollars now!

BOTTOM LINE: Legislators must provide more funding for both mail-in and in-person voting AND provide more resources for the US Post Office and boards of election.

FEDERAL LEVEL

***** BACKGROUND *****
DISENFRANCHISED: Disastrous outdated ballot request process denies eligible voters the right to vote

Scores of Ohio voters attempted to vote in the chaotic 2020 primary, many were denied thanks to an outdated ballot request system. Voters logged on, printed, completed, and mailed absentee ballot applications on time, but never received a ballot OR notification that the application was incomplete. Meanwhile, other eligible voters, ill-informed about the emergency voting process, did not even know how to request a ballot. We MUST update the ballot application process for the November election.

Two simple and effective measures are 1) an online ballot request system AND 2) mailing every registered voter a postage-paid ballot application. SIMPLE.

***** BACKGROUND *****
DISENFRANCHISED VOTERS: Inefficient Mail-In Process & Impossible Deadlines lead to more than 1,600 Rejected Ballots

Confusion, ill-communication, and unacceptable mail delays all contributed to more than 1,600 rejected ballots during the Ohio 2020 primary election. And that is only 3 counties... the total number of rejected ballots is still undetermined.

Butler County officials reported 318 ballots were rejected because the USPS delivered them to the Board of Elections after the May 8th ballot deadline. These ballots were postmarked by the April 27 deadline.

Licking County election officials estimate 9,000 votes did not happen due to confusion over the makeshift election. Officials disappointingly rejected 635 ballots: 337 ineligible provisional ballots (including 290 day-of Election Day ballots) and 298 absentee ballots postmarked late or with missing information.

Lorain County Board of Elections rejected 744 absentee ballots: 421 ballots missed the deadline, 64 lacked the official envelope and return address, 57 lacked signatures, and 21 envelopes were missing ballots. Normally, voters have time to remedy many of these issues, however, an appalling 7-10 day mail delay, coupled with inadequate time between postmark deadlines and Board of Elections deadlines, made any remedies nearly impossible.

More than 300 Butler County ballots delivered late won't count in Ohio primary
